01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Higashi-Mukojima wagashi shop Ittetsu is known for its signature Ittetsu Castella. Unlike the dense, hefty versions typical of classic Japanese castella, this sponge cake has a notably light, airy crumb that highlights the gentle fragrance of fresh eggs. Its sweetness is restrained, making even a generous thick slice easy to enjoy effortlessly, while boxed versions make a welcome neighborhood gift.

Another crowd favorite is the karinto manju, a deep-fried steamed bun with a crisp outer shell that gives way to balanced, subtly sweet bean paste. Popular on weekends and holidays, it is known to sell out by mid-afternoon. Because they can be purchased individually starting from 1, they make a handy snack while strolling through the area.

Inside the display cases, visitors will find delicate seasonal jo-namagashi crafted to evoke the calendar months and festivals, strawberry daifuku pairing fresh fruit with white bean paste, and dorayaki pancakes with an assortment of fillings. There are also longer-keeping specialties such as "Nasugamamani," a bean-jam wafer shaped like the heritage Terajima eggplant. The shop accepts cashless payment including PayPay, making it an easy everyday stop for an afternoon tea accompaniment or a thoughtful seasonal present.
